North Miami occupies a stretch of the mainland coast where Biscayne Bay narrows and the Intracoastal Waterway runs close to shore. This creates productive fishing structure along seawalls, bridge pilings, and residential canals that drain into the bay. Snook, tarpon, and mangrove snapper are the primary targets in these nearshore waters.

The Oleta River, which flows through Oleta River State Park into Biscayne Bay, is one of the most productive natural waterways in the area. The mangrove-lined estuary serves as a nursery for juvenile gamefish and a feeding ground for larger predators. From North Miami's bayfront, it takes roughly fifteen minutes to reach Haulover Inlet through the Intracoastal.
